Prerequisites:

  • Advanced Introduction to Beginning Ayurveda—whether you completed it live in Stowe, VT in 2015 or complete the online version of the same.
  • OR:
  • Education in content equivalent to the Advanced Introduction to Beginning Ayurveda, with instructor consent. Kindly email us for more information about this option.

In the rural setting of the Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa, in Stowe, Vermont, Dr. Welch, Dr. Svoboda and Rose Baudin plan to teach daily for two weeks (with one day off in the middle), in this, the second of two intensive courses designed to take students from the beginning foundation of Ayurveda through intermediate principles. In this installment, Drs. Svoboda and Welch plan to introduce and explore intermediate principals of Ayurveda in a way that will hopefully be meaningful, and practically applicable both to students who wish to apply them in their own lives, and to those who wish to further pursue the study of Ayurveda in order to practice it professionally.

This course offers sufficient depth to prepare students to incorporate more subtle concepts and practices of Ayurveda into a yoga practice, an established medical practice, or to be prepared go on to further studies to learn to apply them clinically.

By the end of this course, if you have kept up with the memorization and study needed to assimilate what is taught, you will be familiar with the following principles:

  • Rasa (taste), virya (energetics), vipaka (post-digestive effect, and prabhava (special effects) of dravya (substances)
  • The thirteen types of agni (digestive and transformational fires)
  • The seven dhatus (bodily tissues), and their associated upadhatus (secondary tissues) and malas (wastes)
  • List the main functions of the seven dhatus
  • Understand the fundamentals of how each dhatu is created, nourished and transformed
  • Symptoms associated with the entry of each dosa into each dhatu
  • The strotamsi (physiological channels) of the body and mind
  • The signs and symptoms of vitiated srotamsi and possible causes of vitiation
  • The six stages of samprapti (pathogenesis)
  • The difference between shamana (gentle dosa-palliative procedures) and shodhana (forcible expulsion of dosa from the body) in the resolution of disorders
  • Ayurvedic psychology: understanding how the mind and body affect each other

Dr. Claudia Welch and Dr. Robert Svoboda combined have more than half a century of practicing and teaching Ayurveda. They have taught introductory material, advanced material and clinical material. They have taught students with no prior knowledge of Ayurveda as well as advanced students and practitioners. In this course, they plan to present what they have found to be the most practically essential elements of the intermediate principles of Ayurveda.

Students should be aware that this program will be videoed, as it is to become the basis of an online educational program. The lectures will therefore be delivered uninterrupted, and question and answer sections will follow. There are no plans to film any students.

As an intense download of information could overwhelm the mental digestion of participants, lecture time has been capped at three and a half hours of per day, with Sunday, May 22 free. To facilitate integration of what is learned, and keep us moving, Ms. Baudin, with decades of experience, beauty and humor, will offer yoga and yoga nidra for a total of two hours daily, designed to help keep us moving and integrating the material. Ms. Baudin is an internationally known yoga teacher and long time friend of Drs. Svoboda and Welch. This schedule allows for a total of 45.5 hours of Ayurveda instruction, 26 hours of yoga instruction, and time to study, absorb, walk, enjoy spa treatments (including Ayurveda-inspired treatments), and generally appreciate springtime in Vermont.

Required Textbook:

Textbook of Ayurveda, Fundamental Principles, Volume 1 by Vasant Lad, M.A.Sc. Also available from Amazon.

Cost for the program is $1650 + room & board. If you just want to take a day or two of the program, there is a $200 per day rate, but please note that priority will be given to students taking the entire program, so there may not be room for this option and, if there is, students may only opt to take stand-alone days starting at the beginning of the course. In other words, it wont work to take a day or two if you’ve missed any previous days. Hope that’s clear.

Once you email us that you would like to register, we’ll let you know what you’ll need to do. It will include contacting Stoweflake Spa to book accommodations and meals. You can do that via email or phone (802) 760-1083. You can get more tasty details from them but here are a few general ones:

Luxury Accommodations: $119.00* per room, per night. Standard Accommodations: $99.00* per room, per night.
