As we come together to learn and grow as individuals and in this community, these are suggested guidelines, meant to cultivate and support unity, open-mindedness and a learning environment for all. By registering for this course, I agree to abide by these agreements.
We understand these courses are open to all, and are and will be used for educational purposes. Some sessions may be repurposed into other courses. We understand using our cameras is welcome and appreciated, as it enlivens the community in a sweet way. If we are uncomfortable with our voice or name being shown, we will each be responsible to turn off our videos or hide our names on our zoom account display.
Each of us has a different perspective on Reality and different experiences. There are many ways to look at a thing. If we can expand to hear all these perspectives without judgment, but with discernment, they may all be able to serve for growth. Everyone has their own background, belief system and view on various concepts. 20th century saint Kirpal Singh wrote, “Each one of us is unique in his own way. There is a divine purpose behind the life of everyone who comes into the world; no one has been created for nothing. We have something to learn from everyone. This is the mystery of humility.” We attempt to enter into community in this spirit of respect and curiosity in order to create a brave learning environment, and allow our own minds and hearts to soften and expand. We agree to respectfully take what supports our learning and leave the rest. We understand the views of the presenters or participants do not necessarily represent the view of DrClaudiaWelch.com founders or principles. We expect all our teachers to be mindful that our community includes participants and instructors from all over the world, potentially from every group, caste, culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or religious or non-religious affiliation. We’d like folks to be welcome and respectful of all in speech, heart and intent. Because we are an international community, we do not expect the same expression or reflection of this inclusive intent. Not all cultures share the same understanding, perspectives on or approaches to gender, sex, religion, caste, etc. Makau Mutua, a Kenyan-American professor who taught international human rights, shares that the Western human rights movement is perceived as, “alien ideology” to many non-Western societies. “The movement does not deeply resonate in the cultural fabrics of non-Western states, except among hypocritical elites steeped in Western ideas. In order ultimately to prevail, the human rights movement must be moored in the cultures of all peoples.” ( Makau Mutua, Human Rights: A Political and Cultural Critique (2002), quoted in Clapham, Human Rights (2007), p. 161. Also quoted in Harvard International Law Journal Vol. 42. Page 208) Because we recognize this variation in approach, we do not insist on any one way of honoring and welcoming all. Please know we welcome all and work to be sensitive to references to any of these topics, to apologize when we err and to continue to attempt to diminish our blind spots.
We use “I” statements in sharing our own experiences and perspectives instead of declarative statements or generalizations about the way things are or should be, or what others do or think, or should do or think.
When we get triggered, we can ask questions of others and ourselves, considering where we can connect and how we can expand. We can have conversations with friends, therapists or confidants outside of sessions when needed. We can breathe and use whatever mental or emotional health tools available to us to return to mental or emotional equilibrium.
This is an exploration.
We do not need to adhere to any particular religion or philosophical perspective in order to benefit from and find common ground with the material discussed.
We are aware that thoughts, words and actions can all cause harm and try to use these carefully.
This is not a space for personal consultations or to have personal physical, mental, emotional or spiritual health issues addressed directly. These are better addressed within the context of consultations with personal practitioners.
We will try to be aware of how much space we take up in the classroom. This includes being conscious of how often our voice is heard in relation to other participants, keeping questions and comments focused on the topic, and taking time to process and listen before speaking.
Seek first to understand and then to be understood (an idea we appreciate from the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”)
We ask that no filming, video or audio recording take place during our sessions outside of the recording done by DrClaudiaWelch.com.
