Eating Disorders, Dr. Welch and Chelsea Roff

A conversation in December 2012, between Dr. Welch and Chelsea Roff about Eating Disorders: As health care practitioners or yoga instructors, what do we need to understand about Eating Disorders and the people who suffer with them?

In her article, Starving for Connection, Chelsea shares her own survival story and asks the absolutely perfect question: “What is the responsibility of the yoga teacher when a severely underweight student walks into class?” She says, “As yoga continues to gain esteem among health professionals, I think we need to have this conversation.” As students and practitioners of Complementary Medicine, this is an equally pertinent question and conversation. In this conversation between Dr. Welch and Chelsea, we explore issues that are seldom discussed in traditional educational forums and ways that yoga instructors and health care practitioners or consultants can support people with Eating Disorders. We learn the ignorant questions, the reasons why yoga could be either harmful or helpful, and some resources we can offer.
