Learning Ayurveda and Retaining Awe: The Value of Contextual Learning

Learning Ayurveda and Retaining Awe: The Value of Contextual Learning

Session Summary:

One of Ayurveda’s great strengths is its attention to context—understanding an individual within the wholeness of life rather than reducing them to isolated parts. In this session from October 26, 2026, hosted by New York Ayurveda & Yoga Association (NYAYA), Dr. Claudia Welch explores how context itself functions as medicine, drawing on Ayurveda, neuroscience, and cross-cultural studies of learning. She explores how Eastern knowledge systems such as Ayurveda and yoga have traditionally been learned in a contextual, relational way, and how this way of learning aligns with right-hemisphere modes of perception that emphasize uncertainty–or awe and mystery. By widening perspective—neurological, cultural, and global—the session highlights how contextual learning can restore balance, integration, and integrity in whole-person health and in the teaching and study of Ayurveda today. Look at NYAYA for monthly offerings on Ayurveda and yoga from many instructors.
